OM-Mount Photomicro Adapter H (PM-CAMS)

Introduction

The OM-Mount Photomicro Adapter H fits OM camera bodies and is an unusual part of the OM system; it was intended for attaching OM bodies to items that were not mainstream parts of the OM system. Some of the Olympus microscope literature refers to it as the PM-CAMS.

The top of the Adapter H has the same fitting as the rear of a lens, and attaches to an OM camera body in the normal way. The bottom of the Adapter H fits into various items and is locked in place by tightening a screw that fits into the circular groove.

Similar adapters

The Photomicro Adapter H is similar to, and interchangeable with, two other adapters:

The significant difference between the Adapter H and the similar ones is the length of the lever that you press to release the adapter from camera body. The camera body mount for the Auto Bellows has a long lever with a black plastic cover that clashes with the overhanging pentaprism of Canon EOS digital SLRs. The Adapter H2 has a very short lever that permits unobstructed use of Canon EOS digital SLRs.

Going digital

There are no moving or electrical connections between the Photomicro Adapter H (or H2) and the Olympus OM camera body, so it is easy to adapt digital camera bodies that are less deep than the OM, and Canon EOS digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras are often used. The most suitable ones are full-frame bodies such as the EOS 5D Mark II, Mark III and Mark IV, the 6D and 6D Mark II, the R8 and the RP, because they have a sensor the same size as 35 mm film.

Olympus OM 35 mm camera bodies and the SC 35 Type 12 scientific camera have a register distance of 46.0 mm from the film plane to the front surface of the mount for lenses. Canon EOS digital SLRs have a corresponding distance of 44.0 mm, and so they need an adapter 2.0 mm thick when they are used to replace an Olympus body. Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras have a corresponding distance of 20.0 mm, and so they need an adapter 26.0 mm thick.

The register distances for many other cameras can be found in Camera Mounts Sorted by Register.
