Test for Unicode support in Web browsers

Hebrew

U+0590 – U+05FF   (1424–1535)

The Hebrew script is caseless and is written right-to-left; it is used for the Hebrew, Ladino and Yiddish languages. It is also sometimes used for printing modern and classical Aramaic. Additional Hebrew characters can be found in Alphabetic Presentation Forms. For more information, visit Nir Dagan’s Hebrew on the Web site. For information on using Unicode for Yiddish, visit Mark H. David’s Understanding Yiddish Information Processing (UYIP) with Unicode site. You can find some Hebrew in Windows-1255 character encoding at http://www.microsoft.com/israel/, some Hebrew in visual ISO 8859-8 encoding at the Israeli Government Tech Site, The Knesset - The Parliament of Israel and Israel Online, and some information in Hebrew about Macintosh computers at http://www.yeda.co.il/. You can find the same page with logical and visual character encoding at Noa (by Elad Eyal) [Logical Hebrew] and Noa (by Elad Eyal) [Visual Hebrew]. Shlomi Tal has produced The Guide to Hebrew Computing in both ISO-Visual Hebrew for Netscape and Unicode UTF-8 Logical Hebrew for Internet Explorer.

Users of Internet Explorer 5 for Windows can choose to install Hebrew Language Support, which allows you to view Hebrew Web pages and adds Hebrew support to some other applications. Internet Explorer 5 can save Hebrew Web pages with alternative character encodings, including Windows, ISO logical and ISO visual. The latest versions of Microsoft’s core fonts for Windows (Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman) include Hebrew characters.

Users of Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 can install an Apple Language Kit that provides Hebrew support in various applications.

Mac OS X incorporates support for Hebrew Unicode from version 10.2 onwards, and the Mellel and Nisus Writer Express word processors support right-to-left Hebrew.

Hebrew Web pages with UTF-8, Windows-1255 and ISO 8859-8 (logical and visual) encodings are supported by Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) with Windows 95 (or higher). Netscape Navigator 7.1 (and Mozilla 1.4) for Macintosh and for Windows supports Hebrew Web pages with UTF-8, ISO 8859-8 visual and logical, Windows, IBM and Mac encodings. The iCab Web browser for Macintosh computers supports Hebrew Web pages with UTF-8, Mac Hebrew and ISO 8859-8 encodings. The Opera Web browser version 7.2 (or higher) supports Hebrew Web pages with UTF-8, ISO 8859-8 visual and logical and Windows encodings.

There is a converter for Yiddish or Hebrew from Windows or Mac Hebrew into Unicode UTF-8 at Refoyl Finkl’s Yiddish Typewriter. It also converts the other way, and supports some other formats.

The characters that appear in the first column of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

You can find some or all of the characters in this range in the Windows Unicode fonts Aharoni, ALPHABETUM Unicode, Arial, Arial Unicode MS, Bitstream CyberBase, Bitstream CyberBit, Cardo, Caslon, Chrysanthi Unicode, CN-Arial, CN-Times, Code2000, Courier New, David, David Transparent, DejaVu Sans, DejaVu Sans Condensed, EversonMono, Ezra SIL, Ezra SIL SR, Fixed Miriam Transparent, Fixedsys Excelsior, FrankRuehl, Free Idg Serif, Free Monospaced, Free Sans, Free Serif, Gisha, Hindsight Unicode, Levenim MT, Linux Biolinum O, Linux Libertine O, Lucida Grande, Lucida Sans, Lucida Sans Typewriter, Lucida Sans Unicode (bug with Internet Explorer 5), Marin, MD King KhammuRabi, Microsoft Sans Serif, Mike Hebrew, Mike Hebrew Web, Miriam, Miriam Fixed, Miriam Transparent, Monospace, MPH 2B Damase, MyMyanmar, Narkisim, Quivira, Reader Sans, Rod, Rod Transparent, Roman Unicode, SBL Hebrew, sixpack, Sun-ExtA, Tahoma, Times New Roman, TITUS Cyberbit Basic, Vusillus Old Face and Zawgyi-One; in the Macintosh OS 9 Unicode fonts HB Arial (Arial Hebrew), HB Corsiva (Corsiva Hebrew), HB New Peninim (New Peninim MT), HB Raanana (Raanan) and Tahoma; in the Macintosh OS X Unicode fonts Arial, Corsiva Hebrew, Lucida Grande, New Peninim MT, Raanana and Times New Roman; and in the Unix Unicode fonts Caslon and ClearlyU.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, Apple’s TrueEdit, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.

If you are not familiar with the characters, you can check the characters displayed here with the graphical display at http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0590.pdf.
