Phags-pa

The Phags-pa range was introduced with version 5.0.0 of the Unicode Standard, and is located in Plane 0, the Basic Multilingual Plane.

The Phags-pa script was designed to reflect the sounds of Mongolian, and was used for writing Mongolian, Chinese and other languages during the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) of Mongolia. It is still used occasionally as a decorative script for writing Tibetan. Phags-pa uses a syllabic alphabetic, and is written vertically from left to right.

Microsoft Windows incorporates support for Phags-pa Unicode from Windows 7 onwards.

The characters that appear in the “Character” columns of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

You can find some or all of the characters in this range in the Windows Unicode fonts BabelStone Phags-pa Book, BabelStone Phags-pa Seal, BabelStone Phags-pa Tibetan A, BabelStone Phags-pa Tibetan B, Code2000 and Microsoft PhagsPa (in Windows 7).

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.
