Meroitic Hieroglyphs

U+10980 – U+1099F   (67968–67999)

The Meroitic Hieroglyphs range was introduced with version 6.1.0 of the Unicode Standard, and is located in Plane 1 (the Supplementary Multilingual Plane). Windows XP and later versions support supplementary characters by default. In Windows 2000, you need to enable support for supplementary characters. These characters cannot easily be displayed in earlier versions of Windows.

The Meroitic script was used to write the Meroitic language of the Kingdom of Meroë in what is now Sudan. The script existed in 2 forms, one epigraphic monumental and the other cursive. The epigraphic monumental form was written top to bottom in columns going from right to left.

The characters that appear in the “Character” columns of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

There are no Unicode fonts designed specifically for Meroitic.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.

If you are not familiar with the characters, you can check the characters displayed here with the graphical display at http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U10980.pdf.
