Kannada

U+0C80 – U+0CFF   (3200–3327)

The Kannada script is used for the Kannada language (formerly known as Canarese), which belongs to the Dravidian group and is the majority language of the Indian State of Karnataka. You can see some Unicode Kannada on the Kannadasaahithya.com Web site and on Xenotype’s Kannada Unicode Sample page.

Microsoft Windows incorporates support for Kannada Unicode from Windows XP onwards.

For users of Macintosh OS X 10.2, a commercial Kannada Language Kit with a Unicode font and 2 keyboard layouts is available from XenoType Technologies, and Nicholas Shanks has produced a free Kannada Font & Keyboard Layout.

The characters that appear in the first column of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

You can find some or all of the characters in this range in the Windows Unicode fonts Akshar Unicode, Arial Unicode MS, Code2000, JanaKannada, Kedage, Mallige, Sampige, Saraswati5, Sun-ExtA and Tunga; and in the Macintosh OS X Unicode font Kedage.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.
