Devanagari

U+0900 – U+097F   (2304–2431)

The Devanagari script is used for several languages, including Bhojpuri, Bihari, Hindi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit. It is also used for writing Panjabi by Indians who are not Sikhs. You can find links to some Hindi newspapers in (non-Unicode) Devanagari at http://www.indianlanguages.com/hindi/newspapers.htm. Microsoft Windows incorporates support for Devanagari Unicode from Windows 2000 onwards. Users of Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 can install an Apple Language Kit that provides Devanagari support in various applications. Mac OS X incorporates support for Devanagari from version 10.2 onwards.

Devanagari Web pages with UTF-8 encoding are supported by Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) with Windows 95 (or higher), by the iCab Web browser for Macintosh, and by Mozilla and Netscape 7.

The characters that appear in the “Character” columns of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, Apple’s TrueEdit, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.
