Cherokee

U+13A0 – U+13FF   (5024–5119)

The Cherokee range was introduced with version 3.0 of the Unicode Standard. Cherokee is an Amerind language used by the Cherokee people of the southern USA; it was only a spoken language until the script was invented in 1821. Microsoft Windows incorporates support for Cherokee Unicode from Windows Vista onwards.

Mac OS X 10.3 includes support for Unicode Cherokee. For users of Macintosh OS X 10.2, a commercial Cherokee Language Kit with a Unicode font and a keyboard layout is available from XenoType Technologies. Free copies are available if you are working to preserve original Cherokee texts.

The characters that appear in the first column of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.

You can find some or all of the characters in this range in the Windows Unicode fonts Aboriginal Sans, Aboriginal Serif, Code2000, Digohweli, EversonMono, Free Serif, Hindsight Unicode, Marin, MPH 2B Damase, Plantagenet Cherokee, Quivira and Sun-ExtA; in the Macintosh OS X Unicode font Plantagenet Cherokee; and in the Unix Unicode font ClearlyU.

To see exactly which characters are included in a particular font, you can use a utility such as Andrew West’s BabelMap, or WunderMoosen’s FontChecker.
